Perfect for cozy dinners, this dish combines tender ground beef simmered in a savory onion and beef broth gravy, served over buttery garlic-infused mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale

Mashed Potatoes

  • water
  • 1 tablespoon salt (more or less to taste)
  • 2 pounds russet potatoes (peeled, cut into 1-inch pieces; or Yukon gold potatoes)
  • 3 tablespoons butter (at room temperature)
  • ½ cup whole milk (at room temperature)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt (to taste)
  • freshly cracked black pepper (to taste)

Ground Beef and Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ¼ cup beef broth (low-sodium if desired)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth (low-sodium if desired)
  • ½ cup chopped white onion (approximately 1 small onion)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt (more or less to taste)
  • ¼½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes: Fill a medium pot with water, add 1 tablespoon salt, and stir to dissolve. Add the peeled and cut potatoes to the pot and place over medium-high heat. Bring the water to a rapid boil and cook the potatoes for 5 to 8 minutes, or until they are easily pierced with a fork.
  2. Heat Butter and Milk: While the potatoes cook, add the butter and whole milk to a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until the butter is fully melted. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Drain and Mash Potatoes: Once the potatoes are tender, carefully drain all the water from the pot and return the pot to a cool burner. Mash the potatoes to your desired consistency using a potato masher or fork.
  4. Combine and Season Mashed Potatoes: Gradually stir the warm butter-milk mixture into the mashed potatoes until fully incorporated. Season with garlic powder, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper to taste. Mix well and adjust seasonings as needed. Set aside until serving.
  5. Prepare Cornstarch Slurry: In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and ¼ cup beef broth until smooth. Set aside for later use.
  6. Cook Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until no longer pink. Drain any excess liquid from the pan and discard.
  7. Simmer with Broth and Onion: To the cooked beef, add 1 ½ cups beef broth, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir gently to combine and simmer uncovered for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the onion is tender.
  8. Thicken the Gravy: Slowly whisk the cornstarch slurry into the skillet. Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook for about 2 minutes until the gravy has thickened.
  9. Serve: Divide the mashed potatoes evenly between serving bowls. Spoon the ground beef and gravy over the potatoes. Serve warm and offer extra gravy on the side if desired.

Notes

  • For creamier mashed potatoes, use Yukon gold potatoes as an alternative to russet.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, increase the amount of cornstarch slurry slightly.
  • Adjust salt and pepper seasoning according to your taste preferences.
  • Using low-sodium beef broth can help control the salt level of the dish.
  • Mashed potatoes can be kept warm in a covered pot over low heat if not serving immediately.
