Description

This Baked Italian Sub is a savory, melty sandwich featuring layers of Italian deli meats, roasted peppers, and Fontina cheese, baked inside a fresh 12-inch Italian sub loaf for a warm, flavorful meal perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Dressing

  • 1 12-inch Italian sub loaf (preferably from the deli)
  • 34 tbsp Italian dressing

Peppers

  • 1/4 cup pepperoncini peppers (sliced)
  • 1/4 cup marinated roasted red peppers (sliced thin)

Meats

  • 1/4 lb capicola ham (thinly sliced)
  • 1/4 lb ham (thinly sliced)
  • 1/4 lb salami (thinly sliced)
  • 1/8 lb pepperoni (thinly sliced)

Cheese and Seasoning

  • 1/4 lb Fontina cheese (thinly sliced)
  • Red pepper flakes (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easy.
  2. Prepare the Sub Loaf: Slice the 12-inch Italian sub loaf in half lengthwise, but don’t cut all the way through; create a butterfly effect by pulling the halves apart gently. Optionally, you can cut the loaf into two 6-inch subs if easier to handle. Brush 3-4 tablespoons of Italian dressing evenly on both halves to add moisture and flavor.
  3. Add Peppers: Evenly spread the sliced pepperoncini peppers and marinated roasted red peppers over both halves of the bread. These add a tangy and slightly spicy kick to the sub.
  4. Layer Meats and Cheese: Layer the thinly sliced capicola ham, ham, salami, pepperoni, and Fontina cheese evenly on top of the peppers on each half. Make sure to distribute ingredients evenly for balanced flavors.
  5. Sprinkle and Bake: Sprinkle red pepper flakes over the layered subs according to your heat preference. Carefully place the halves on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10-13 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted.
  6. Finish and Serve: Remove the subs from the oven, close the two halves back together, and if desired, cut each sub in half for easier serving. Enjoy warm for the best taste experience.

Notes

  • You can substitute Fontina cheese with provolone or mozzarella if preferred.
  • Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to control the spice level.
  • Using freshly sliced deli meat from your local deli will enhance the sandwich’s flavor.
  • For a crispier sandwich, broil for the last 1-2 minutes but watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • This sandwich is best enjoyed freshly baked but can be stored wrapped in foil and reheated.
